Brendan Rodgers seems to rather enjoy the ‘Invincibles’ tag that is attached to his Celtic side after an incredible run of 63 domestic games unbeaten, and it is one that won’t be given up lightly.

But another adjective that could just as aptly describe this team he has moulded is relentless. It is perhaps the one quality of this Celtic squad that has earned them that infallibility on the home front, as they maintain their remarkable hunger for grinding out results with as much dependable regularity as the sun rising and setting.

Of course, what is just as certain, is that the run will end at some point. Now, this isn’t to say that a game in the Highlands against Ross County after an international break is not a mouthwatering prospect, but with the glamour of a visit to France to take on Paris Saint Germain before lining up at Hampden for the first major final of the season to follow, it would seem to those on the outside of the club to be a game Celtic would simply want to be over and done with. And subsequently, not a match that would command their entire focus.

Not a bit of it. Speaking at Lennoxtown yesterday, Rodgers stressed the need for his players to maintain their hunger for every match that they come into, whether they are playing in the biting cold of Dingwall or in the Parc De Princes.

As everyone in Scottish football knows, the next six weeks ‘tis the season to be playing every other day, and Rodgers is gearing his players up for what he describes as a critical juncture in their season if they are to keep their unyielding juggernaut rolling on.

“It’ll end at some point,” said Rodgers. “We only focus on the next game and we won’t be giving it up easy, that’s for sure. The squad is coming back now. I see the competitiveness in the players now – we have Patrick [Roberts] back training, Simunovic is back training and the players are hungry.

“We are working tirelessly every day. We go in knowing it is a tough game against Ross County but we go into every game planning to win. There is no difference. We don’t think about anything other than the Ross County game.

“It’s the same idea [as last season]. Once all the players are back from international duty, we will focus in on this next period through to the end of December.

“We have clear goals and targets to try and achieve in this period and that’s something which will make sure we keep our minds focused on our work.

“It’s a great spell of games, it’s where we need the squad, but they are brilliant games for us.

“It’s still very early but we just have to keep focusing on ourselves. We have to play well. We’ve got a lot of games, really exciting fixtures. We know what we want to achieve but we know there is a lot of hard work involved.”

Rodgers was speaking just after his full-back Kieran Tierney had been named the Ladbrokes player of the month for October, capping off a fine period for the 20-year-old off the back of captaining Scotland for the first time against The Netherlands. An honour that was thoroughly deserved, according to his manager.

“Amazing,” said Rodgers, simply. “He has shown those qualities. He is a young guy who is developing and maturing on and off the field.

“I heard him speak at the end of the season at the Scottish Football Writers’ Association dinner and I thought he spoke so well. It is nice to see young players come on in all aspects and see the interpersonal skills improve. It is brilliant watching that maturity develop. Because of his level of play he has the respect and how he carries himself.

“His first target will be 50 games. That is what they all look to at international level and if he can stay injury free then there is every chance he will go on and get many more caps. He can be a great leader for Scotland and I think he will be a captain here at Celtic one day. He is learning off a great captain at the minute in Scott [Brown].

Unfortunately, neither Tierney nor Brown will be at the World Cup in Russia next summer with Scotland failing to make the party, but there is a healthy contingent of Celtic players who will be boarding their respective planes for the greatest stage of them all, with Tom Rogic, Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa and Erik Sviatchenko all in with a shout. A fact which delights Rodgers.

“It’s brilliant,” he said.“It’s the pinnacle of an international career so I’m really delighted for the guys.”
