THE principal of Glasgow University and a former moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland have been honoured at Buckingham Palace.

Professor Anton Muscatelli was knighted for his services to higher education while the Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood received an OBE for her service to the church and her role in the Remembering Srebrenica charity.

After the ceremony in which he was knighted by Prince Charles, Sir Anton said: "It was a great privilege to meet Prince Charles and to share what was a very special day with my family.

"In many ways though this an award for the hard work and commitment from colleagues, students and alumni from the whole of the University of Glasgow as much as it for me.”

Ms Hood received the award for her "exceptional and long service to the Church of Scotland and promoting tolerance and understanding" through her role as chairwoman of the Scottish board of Remembering Srebrenica.

Dr Hood picked up the honour the day after Ratko Mladic was jailed for life after being found guilty of genocide and other atrocities in the 1990s Bosnian war.

She has dedicated her OBE to the Mothers of Srebrenica organisation and the many survivors of the 1995 Bosnian massacre who speak out to try and tackle hatred and intolerance.

She said: "It has been a wonderful day shared with my husband Peter and our children, Laura and Michael.

"It has been very poignant for me as Mladic was convicted yesterday.

"It was such as sense of occasion and I am humbled by the achievements of so many recipients like the principal of Glasgow University Sir Anton Muscatelli."
