Scotland is set to enjoy warm and sunny weather over the coming bank holiday weekend.

Forecasters predict that temperatures will begin to rise from the middle of the week, with high UV levels expected across much of the country.

While Monday and Tuesday will see a mixed bag of weather, with sunshine in Eastern and Southern parts of the country and rain and cloud in the West, the Met Office says that by Wednesday, most of Scotland will be enjoying temperatures up to 22C.

Forecaster Craig Snell said: "It will be a bit of a fiddly start to the week, but as we go into the middle part, for many it will be fairly dry and sunny and fairly warm."

The West of Scotland will see further rain and cloud on Monday, with showers expected to be heavy at times and temperatures sitting at about 9C or 10C.

However, it will be a much brighter day in Southern and Eastern parts, with temperatures reaching the low 20s.

Tuesday will see further cloud and rain, but the picture will gradually begin to improve as the wet weather moves out across the Atlantic Ocean.

Glasgow and Edinburgh could see sunshine and warm temperatures of 22C by the afternoon, but the cloud will continue in the North of Scotland.

Mr Snell said: "Looking to the middle part of the week, there should be an improving picture, with more in the way of sunshine.

"Wednesday will be a fairly nice day with some good spells of sunshine and high UV levels.

"Temperatures will definitely be in the high teens, with Glasgow and Southern parts of the country reaching 21 or 22C.

"As we move towards the end of the week and the bank holiday weekend, most of the country will continue to see good weather with temperatures in the high teens.

"However, the East coast could begin to see some low cloud."

The rest of the UK is also set to see warm, sunny weather, with forecasters in England and Wales predicting 10 days of unbroken sunshine and temperatures reaching up to 25C.

Scotland enjoyed some record-breaking bank-holiday weather earlier this month, with temperatures in Edinburgh reaching 24C on May 7 - making it the warmest May bank holiday Monday since 1999.
