Relatives of a tragic Aberdeen teenager who died after falling ill while out with friends have thanked the kind strangers who tried to save his life.

Zaine Grieve, 14, injured himself while standing at School Brae, Portlethen, at about 11pm on Saturday.

Emergency crews raced to the scene while passers-by attempted first aid in a bid to save him to no avail.

His family said in a statement: "We would like to thank the passersby who stopped and tried their best to save Zaine's life, as well as the emergency services who attended."

They said they were "devastated".

Police said the death was not suspicious but officers were trying to establish the exact circumstances.

The teenager's family said: "We have been left absolutely devastated by the death of Zaine who was a much-loved son and brother.

"Zaine was extremely popular and will be missed by all his family and many friends.

"We would also like to thank everyone who has sent us messages of support."

Earlier Inspector Darren Bruce said while inquiries were at an early stage over the circumstances of the death, there were not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

He added: "As part of our enquiries there will be a police presence in the area as information is gathered. I would like to thank the local community for your patience and understanding while this is carried out."
