LIFE can be a challenge – no-one knows that more than Robert McGhee.

The 37-year-old, from Balornock, was born with no arms but has never let it stop him from living his life to the full.

“I just get on with it,” says Robert. “I drive, I like swimming, and I love my job.”

Robert works in the assembly department of RSBi, part of City Building, our partners in a fantastic new makeover competition worth thousands of pounds.

We have teamed up with the awardwinning building contractor to reward an individual or community group going above and beyond to make a difference to other people’s lives.

It could be a kinship carer, looking after young children because their parents are unable to do so, in desperate need of a new kitchen in their home.

Perhaps you know of a local sports club for disabled children, which could really benefit from new changing rooms, or a children’s charity which needs a playroom?

Perhaps you would love to give a bedroom makeover to a young person, who has overcome ill-health or adversity but dedicates his or her time to the community?

Dr Graham Paterson, executive director of RSBi and City Building said: “Glasgow is home to so many hardworking, selfless and deserving people.

“To be able to give back to someone who has given so much to their friends, family or neighbours goes to the heart of what RSBi is all about.

“We are dedicated to making a positive difference, whether it’s through training opportunities for young people, supporting local charities or giving our staff the chance to carry out essential work in the community.

“Through this partnership with The Evening Times we are able to provide support in a new and unique way.”

Evening Times deputy editor Henry Ainslie said: “Every year, through our Glasgow Community Champions Awards and Streets Ahead campaign, we hear about people going above and beyond to help others.

“Our city is full of them, hardworking men, women and children selflessly giving up their time to improve their communities.”

He added: “Our new partnership with City Building is all about rewarding an unsung hero and giving them something which will make their lives easier.

“I’m really looking forward to hearing our readers’ nominations for this fantastic makeover competition.”

Whatever the winning project, it will be delivered by the expert teams based at City Building’s manufacturing supported factory, Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi).

The RSBi provides a range of high quality products, all made on its site in Springburn, including office and educational furniture, kitchen and bathroom units, timber kits for houses and schools, student accommodation and beds and soft furnishings.

There are 260 staff on the Springburn site, more than half of whom have a disability, including visual and hearing impairments and learning difficulties.

Manager Ben Kerr said: “We are looking forward to working with the winner to create a fantastic space for them.

“Many of our clients require bespoke products, so this is exactly what we do every day and we are proud to be part of this competition. Our designers will work with the winner to come up with a plan, and then our teams on the shop floor will get to work.”

Ben has worked at RSBi for 16 years.

“This is a unique place to work,” he explained. “Everyone is given the opportunity to thrive, through a range of training and development opportunities. The company really invests in its staff, which is fantastic to see.”

Robert McGhee agrees. “You get a lot of support here,” he said. “It’s different from other places I’ve worked .There’s a real variety of things to do every day.”

Robert has ‘feeders’ – colleagues who feed the materials to him as he works – to assist him when he is building furniture.

He is delighted to be involved in our makeover competition, using his skills to help reward people who have, like him, faced challenges in their lives.

“I have been here for 18 years now, I do everything in the factory, drive the forklift, use the nailgun, build the drawers,” he said, adding with a smile: “The only difference is I use my feet.”
