A TEENAGE track star impressed tennis coach Judy Murray after running rings round his personal struggles.

Cormac O’Hara was announced as Cosgrove Care’s first Young Ambassador at the charity’s annual sporting dinner.

Supported by Cosgrove, 17-year-old Cormac has used his love of running to overcome the challenges of autism, epilepsy and anxiety.

And he was thrilled to meet Judy – mum of tennis stars Andy and Jamie Murray – after delivering a speech at the glittering event.

Cormac said: “It was exciting to meet her.

“She gave me some hints and tips on public speaking and about sport.”

Cosgrove, which provides support, advice and information to those with additional needs, selected Williamwood High School pupil Cormac to represent the charity after hearing him tell others about the challenges he has faced.

Cormac, from Newton Mearns, said: “The role involves speaking at public events and being an ambassador for the charity, as well as a voice for young people who can’t speak for themselves.

“It’s a good challenge for me.

“I spoke at the dinner and I was bit nervous at first but, when I finished, I got a standing ovation.”

Cormac, who has received support from Cosgrove for three years, was joined on stage by another inspirational sports enthusiast – quadriplegic mountaineer Jamie Andrew.

Heather Gray, Cosgrove’s chief executive, is full of praise for Cormac and his achievements.

She said: “He is an inspiration to other young people and proof that, with the right support, you can achieve your hopes, dreams and potential.

“We are very proud to share in Cormac’s journey and successes.”

Cormac was also recently selected for the Team GB Paralympic Pathway initiative, which spots talent and provides help to train budding athletes and create future paralympians.

Among his biggest fans is proud mum Yvonne.

She said: “Cormac has worked very hard to overcome a lot of challenges in his life and he hopes to inspire others to overcome their own.

“Cosgrove has been great in supporting Cormac and it’s nice for him to be able to give something back.”
