Two hospital were placed on lockdown after a woman was attacked.

An emergency response was sparked after the incident unfolded on the grounds of Ailsa Hospital on Dalmellington Road.

Staff, visitors and patients at Ailsa hospital and University Hospital Ayr campus were not being allowed to leave the site as police search for the attacker.

The lockdown has since only been restricted to Ailsa Hospital.

The woman is currently being treated in hospital.

Local police officers are being supported by a police helicopter to trace the person responsible.

A spokesperson for NHS Ayrshire and Arran Health Board said: "Due to an incident on the grounds of Ailsa Hospital earlier today, Ailsa Hospital is on full lockdown.

"No members of staff, patients or visitors will be able to leave the sites until advised. A further update will be given as soon as possible."

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 10.05am police received a report that a woman had been attacked in the grounds of Ailsa hospital on Dalmellington Road. Emergency services are in attendance and the woman has been taken to hospital.

“Local police officers supported by police helicopter are conducting a search of the area and enquiries are ongoing.”

It could not be confirmed whether the victim was a staff member, patient or visitor.
