DUNDEE's new V&A building has won the title of Best New Public Building from a leading design magazine.

Wallpaper* has given the award to the V&A Dundee and its architect, Kengo Kuma and associates.

Philip Long, director of V&A Dundee, said: “We are delighted to win this prestigious global award, recognising V&A Dundee as the Best New Public Building.

"Wallpaper* is one of the world’s most highly respected design magazines and everyone at V&A Dundee is thrilled to have won, especially when we were shortlisted against such incredible international projects as the Apple Park Visitor Centre in California.

"V&A Dundee has already welcomed over 360,000 visitors, and we are all looking forward to an exciting year with exhibitions on videogames and the future of robots."

The magazine said that "the highly sculptural V&A Dundee is Japanese architect Kengo Kuma’s first UK building – and Scotland’s first dedicated design museum.

"The ragged cliffs of north eastern Scotland inspired the composition’s distinct shape, clad in some 2,500 sheets of layered horizontal cast stone panelling.

"Yet the concrete structure appears light, bearing an abstracted resemblance to the prow of a moored ship."

It adds: "Kuma wanted this building to welcome visitors with a strong design gesture."

Other short listed buildings included the Qatar National Library, Qatar, the Apple Park Visitor Center, US, by Foster + Partners, the Guardian Art Center, China, by Buro Ole Scheeren and the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, Taiwan, by Mecanoo.

The £80m museum in Dundee opened in September, with a V&A show about the design of ocean liners.

Its next major show will be Design/Play/Disrupt, which will look at the design and art of computer games.

It focusses on popular games such as The Last of Us, Splatoon, and Minecraft, and focusses on games from the early 2000s.

It also features rarely seen material including designers’ notebooks, concept art, prototypes and the artistic inspirations behind games such as Journey, Kentucky Route Zero and No Man’s Sky.

Wallpaper focusses on design and architecture, fashion, travel, art, and lifestyle issues, and was founded in 1996.
