John Bercow could become the first Speaker to be denied a peerage upon his retirement.

Ministers are allegedly furious at John Bercow's apparent bias during debates on Brexit.

For over 200 years, the Speaker has automatically been offered a seat in the House of Lords when they step down from the role, but this tradition could be set to change.

A Cabinet source told the BBC: "It's a good job peerage nominations are in our gift."

They added: "I'm sure we'll be thinking carefully about which individuals we would choose to elevate to the House of Lords.

"I can't imagine we would look favourably on those who've cheated centuries of procedure."
