A 30-year-old man was chased and assaulted by teenagers wearing orange face paint in the Borders in what police describe as a "distressing" attack.

The victim was pursued by a group of three males aged between 14 and 16 in Kelso. When he stopped, he was assaulted by two of the youths.

The man sustained a minor eye injury which did not require medical attention in the incident, which happened between 3am and 3.30am on Sunday in the Bridge Street area.

Sergeant Andy Leigh, of Lauder police station, said: "This was a distressing incident for the victim and we are eager to trace the three teenagers involved in this attack as soon as possible.

"I would ask anyone who was in the Bridge Street area of Kelso in the early hours of Sunday April 3 and saw anything suspicious to please get in touch with us immediately."
