GOLFER Colin Montgomerie signed a financial agreement with his wife after admitting to an affair so he could keep his post as European Ryder Cup captain, a court has heard.

His manager, Guy Kinnings, of sports management firm IMG, told the Court of Session how Mr Montgomerie said he signed a post-nuptial agreement with wife Gaynor Knowles in January 2010.

Speaking on the second day of a divorce hearing, he said the signing took place in the months before Europe won the Ryder Cup with Mr Montgomerie as captain.

Mr Kinnings told Mr Montgomerie’s lawyer Kenneth McBrearty, QC, that his company worked with the golfer and tried to secure him a lucrative financial deal.

Mr Montgomerie has gone to Scotland’s highest civil court to divorce his wife. According to court papers, lawyers acting for Mr Montgomerie say he objects to the so-called post-nuptial agreement he signed in January 2010.

Mr Montgomerie, who on Tuesday at the court admitted to having affairs with other women, signed the document after his wife caught him cheating.

The agreement committed him to paying for the upkeep of his wife’s £2 million farmhouse and to transferring the 50 per cent stake he had in the property if he had other future affairs.

Mr Montgomerie is suing Ms Knowles for £5m and is also demanding monthly payments of £6,500 from her.

Ms Knowles is demanding Mr Montgomerie honours the post-nuptial deal and is counter-suing him for £5m and payments of £10,000 per month.
