IT is not correct to link concerns about equal pay at the BBC with the gender pay gap at easyJet ("BBC pay row shows women are still second-class employees", The Herald, January 10). Equal pay is women being paid the same as men for the same job, whereas the gender pay gap is about the average pay across an organisation.

Our pilots and cabin crew, who make up three-quarters of our employees, have standard salaries that are collectively agreed with the trade unions. This means that a female captain based at Glasgow is paid the same as her male equivalent.

easyJet’s gender pay gap is because we employ many pilots, who are paid significantly more than most other people at easyJet, and who are 94 per cent male. This dramatically increases the average male salary across easyJet, but it does not mean women are being paid less for the same work.
