I NOTE with interest the Agenda contribution from Duncan MacIntyre ("Rethinking the lessons of the WW1 centenary", The Herald, June 8). In this centenary of The War to End All Wars we should be making every effort to promote peace.

Why, in two weeks’ time, is Glasgow playing host to the manufacturers and salesmen promoting weaponry which can only be used for aggressive purposes with an arms fair? I understand some of the equipment being sold is the type used in Trident missile-carrying submarines. Surely this city still refers to itself as a “Nuclear Free Zone”? It is also in a country governed by a party which supports a nuclear-free world. Apparently principle is abandoned in favour of profitable account books. Mammon has become the new god.
