DUNCAN Miller's memories of being taught by a Mr Maccetti (Letters, July 11) reminded me of how Liz Strachan, who for 36 years taught mathematics in Montrose, recalls in her book A Slice of Pi, the occasion when she was dining and the waiter brought her a glass of red wine which she had not ordered.

"That's from the gentleman at the far end, Madam. He still remembers that Pythagoras wouldn't eat beans."
