AM I one of many suckers? I find myself a victim of what must be called sneaky and predatory road-traffic-infringement fining. After two of my last four trips to Glasgow, I have received a Bus Lane Enforcement Charge Notice.

It’s evidently good for the coffers of the city council to maintain neglected and ill-defined road markings, and fine the unwary (on Cathedral Street). I daresay natives of Glasgow jaloose some of them; but all can’t be escaping them. And visitors to the city are easy prey. Vigilance to observe the traffic regulations has been of no avail in my case.

It might be worth considering the wisdom of the city council’s practice. Okay. Let’s allow that it may be opportunistic rather than simply exploitative. But short-term financial advantage deriving from the policy is not prudent. I fancy that I’m one of many moved to disaffection for the city. I’m reluctant to go where the official policy is to rip me off.
