IT was great to see Russell Leadbetter's choice of Provand's Lordship with the surrounding tenements in 1956 from the Picture Store ("1956: Provand's Lordship's role in Glasgow-Edinburgh rivalry", The Herald, July 14). I was born a few hundred yards away in that year.

Much more could be said about Glasgow's wonderful historic house, not least its possible connection with Mary Queen of Scots' fateful visit to her husband Lord Darnley.

However it is incorrect to say that "no small house of comparable antiquity survives in Edinburgh". Both John Knox House and Moubray House in the capital's High Street have 15th century cores, while their exteriors relate to the 16th century, in contrast with Provand's Lordship's 1671 extension.

All of which goes to show that both great cities have a proud heritage – complementary not competing. The future lies in partnership that will reap benefits for Scotland as a whole,
