BRIAN T McFarlane (Letters, August 6) articulates the views and experiences of many visitors to our NHS hospitals. In particular the approach to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital entrance in Glasgow is a sad example of the non-compliance and lack of enforcement of the no smoking code of practice. Apart from the ever-present spectacle of patients (often in wheelchairs) and others puffing profusely, there is ample evidence by way of discarded butts (literally hundreds) to confirm the disdain afforded visitors.

Perhaps the offenders should seriously check their own cigarette packs which clearly indicate smoking does occasion health risk to both the user ... and others.
