IF Clark Cross (Letters, August 14) wishes to ignite a battle between "climate change deniers" and "green zealots", may I point out that I own a cycle (and a car) and pay plenty of tax. Mr Cross may object that no tax is levied on the use of my bicycle but I would observe that most of his activities are not specifically taxed either. Does Mr Cross think he should pay pedestrian tax to walk on the pavement?

For the record, I would have no objection to compulsory cycle insurance, but could Mr Cross explain how this would work without raising the minimum age for cycling to at least 16?
