BRITAIN with a miniscule 1.3 per cent of global emissions has spent billions on the quest to reduce CO2 emissions to combat climate change.

But what about China the largest emitter on the planet with 30 per cent they surely will save the planet? Could be a problem since it only agreed at the Paris accord to reduce its emissions AFTER 2030 and would increase them until then. Now reports suggest that China could add 400 million tons of coal capacity over the next two years creating even more emissions.

Donald Trump has withdrawn from the Paris accord and will not contribute to the £100 billion a year promised from 2020 by developed countries to developing countries ostensibly to build defences against the so-called effects of climate change. How much will end up in the pockets of despots?

The white knight of carbon capture and storage (CCS) has yet to appear despite billions being spent on research.

The UK, especially Scotland, should stop the pretence of being a significant CO2 player and instead spend the billions on the NHS, education, fuel poverty and numerous other more worthwhile recipients.

THE notorious Climate Change Act is 10 years old. In a fit of absence of mind the House of Commons rubber-stamped it with only five MPs voting against.

A year before, the Green Party required a Scottish version as a pay-off for supporting the SNP minority government and Alex Salmond's election as First Minister.

This terrible act has worsened fuel poverty, wrecked our industrial base and has already cost us more than £300 billion. Brexit is almost a bargain in comparison.
