DEEP down, I agree with R Russell Smith and Allan C Steele (Letters, December 7) but, since moving down to the Borders, I have got used to being hugged.

It was never a family trait. But there was one occasion, several years ago, when a German man came into the place where I worked, chose a very expensive piece of jewellery and asked could it be gift-wrapped. I made a special effort with pretty paper and several bows. As I handed it to him he took my hand, said “Danke, gnadige Frau” and kissed it; beautifully. Much better than a hug any day, as I could see the twinkle in his eyes.
