DR Gerald Edward’s claim that the SNP has presided over arguably the worst few years in the history of “improving” education. (Letters, January 4) suggests his analytical skills have been lost. Scotland has given a greater proportion of its population a higher or further educational qualification than any other country except Luxembourg. This position has improved during the SNP’s time in power, during which graduates have known no other government in their education.

Responsibility for this achievement is also down to local authorities that provide schooling and appoint staff. When things go wrong all they must also share some responsibility.
