WINDSOR Davies (Herald Obituary, January 21) will always be remembered for his quintessential British Army old-school Sergeant-Major roles in 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Terrahawks, and as feuding antique dealer Oliver Smallbridge in Never The Twain with Donald Sinden.

Yet he also proved adept at drama: Philip Madoc had all but made the role of David Lloyd George his own in the BBC's 1981 biopic, but Davies's portrayal in Channel 4's 1998 biopic of Oswald Mosley was a masterclass. His No 1 with Don Estelle duetting Whispering Grass in 1975 and top 10 album the following year were long overdue reward for their years together touring in the 1950s and 60s, Davies's deep bass voice the perfect counterpoint to Estelle's powerful tenor. The entertainment world is certainly a poorer place for his passing.
