It was once claimed that there were more statues to animals than to women in Edinburgh. The situation in Glasgow is little better, although improved with the recent addition of a memorial to social campaigner Mary Barbour.

Now Edinburgh is to help redress the deficit in public recognition of the achievements of women, with the unveiling of a statue to the surgeon and equal rights champion Dr Elsie Inglis. The fact these events – and the recent erection of a monument to Suffragist Millicent Fawcett in London – even merit comment is a sign that there is a way to go. But it is a start.
