MAY I be allowed to point out to Alan J. Sangster (“Global warming crisis should be at the forefront of politicians’ action agenda”, Letters, The Herald, June 19) that, in my correspondence, there was not a single reference to the growth of renewables.

My query, which he, along with 129 MSPs, the management team of Scottish Renewables and WWF plus a multitude of university professors, failed to answer was this: why does Scotland need 12,000 megawatts (MW) of installed generation to meet a maximum demand of 5,000 MW?

I am happy to repeat my claim that the £20 billion of capital tied up in 7,000 MW of over-capacity plant would have been better spent on public services that require cash at present, such as a new computer system for the Police Scotland national force.
