LIKE Richard McLellan (Letters, September 15), I well remember 1968.

It was a significant year for structural engineers, with the Ronan Point collapse in London, the collapse of large cooling towers and our own mega gale.

The “Red Road” multi-storey flats had just been completed and occupied.

Having been part of the team involved in the design of this substantial housing development, we were aware that they would be swaying noticeably in the extreme conditions.

This must have been alarming for the new residents 30 storeys up.

The structures were more than up to the job.

This was testified to by the refusal of some to be demolished in their entirety in more recent times.
