IT was pleasing to read that Theresa May has dropped the Conservative party promise to have a Commons vote on whether or not to bring back fox-hunting south of the border (“PM ditches manifesto pledge for vote on bringing back fox-hunting”, The Herald, January 8). Every time this subject comes up I am reminded of the words of Oscar Wilde about “the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable”. The “unspeakable” will therefore have to reconcile themselves to continuing with their hunting in modified fashion or otherwise to finding a new hobby to fill any gaps materialising in their busy weeks.
