FOR me, this (March 12) is the saddest day of the year. Sir Ken Dodd, the genius of entertainment, has gone (“Laughing all the way to heaven … farewell to a tattyfilarious genius”, The Herald, March 13).

The stage minutes of Doddy and we never saw midnight. Twenty minutes and we forgot the world. Doddy cared for us elderly – he never let us go home in the dark.

It's a pity that he never went into politics. With Doddy as Prime Minister, the Common Market would never have left the UK. As Chancellor, who could have refused to pay taxes? As Foreign Secretary no enemy could have attacked us for laughing.

I've always wanted to bang the Knotty Ash drum.
