As reported earlier today, eagle-eyed viewers of Prime Minister’s Questions kept coming back to one sartorial issue – was an MP wearing a football top?

And if yes, who and why?

The answer came in Scottish questions, which took place just before PMQs.

The SNP’s Hannah Bardell explained her outfit was in solidarity with the women’s Scotland team which plays England in the group stages of Euro 2017.

Bardell, the MP for Livingston, said she played alongside two of the team at university – only for their respective football careers to go in different directions.

Some wondered if it was right that an MP could wear part of a footy kit to work.

While others blamed the standards of Commons attire on the “no-tie” rule brought in by speaker John Bercow.

Bardell’s wardrobe choice attracted amusement, ridicule and praise in equal measure.

England v Scotland kicks off at 7.45pm. It is live on Channel 4.

Earlier, Bardell tweeted a good luck message to the team.
