TONY Blair has met with the European Commission president, who greeted the former prime minister with a hug and a kiss.

Mr Blair met Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels at the same time as the Brexit talks have been taking place.

Some criticised the meeting, saying Mr Blair could potentially to interfere with the referendum talks.

In a Brexit press conference one journalist asked: “It cannot be helpful having former Prime Minister Tony Blair here hugging and kissing Jean Claude Junker?”

However Brexit Secretary David Davis said he would not comment on the “movements of private citizens”.

Commission spokesman Alexander Winterstein said ahead of the meeting that Mr Juncker kept in close contact with former leaders and there was “no conspiracy theory there”.

He said: “They are good friends, they’ve known each other for a very long time.”

Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage told the Express: “That was Juncker’s kiss of death for nation state democracy.”
