Alloa Athletic finally booked their play-off spot with a stylish 6-1 win over Brechin City.

Iain Flannigan and Greig Spence both scored doubles and there was no way back for Brechin when goalkeeper Graeme Smith was sent off after an hour.

The win guarantees second place for Alloa behind Livingston, who won 1-0 at Stenhousemuir with top scorer Liam Buchanan again on target.

Alloa can now relax a little and plot their play-off plans.

"I was delighted to see those two goals fly in," said Flannigan.

"It just rounded off a very pleasing afternoon. It was important that we bounced back from losing to Livingston.

"I thought we played well from start to finish and it was a great result for us. We can focus on the play-offs now and maybe the manager will be able to rest one or two players in the next three games before the play-offs."

Spence has now taken his tally to 23 for the season and added: "I'm happy to score as many goals as I have so far, although by my own standards I would really like to have scored even more.

"Now that we're into the play-offs, there's still plenty of time to add to my total between now and the end of the season."

There is a log-jam for the remaining two play-off places.

Queen's Park moved up to third with a 2-0 win over Albion Rovers as East Fife lost 2-1 at home to second-bottom Peterhead.

Craig Reid, who headed the winning goal, admitted: "We needed the win because we’re running out of games and are in a sticky situation.

"It wasn’t about how we won, it was all about getting the three points and it was a relief at the end.

"It was backs-to-the-wall a bit at the end but I think we were worthy of the three points.

"Stranraer won as well but that’s just our luck and made it all the more important we beat East Fife.

"We have three games left to get as many points as we can and see where we're at."

Mark McGuigan and Kyle Turner scored in Stranraer's 2-1 home win over Airdrieonians which kept them three points ahead of Peterhead.

Airdrie are still clinging onto the last play-off spot but still have work to do if they are to stay ahead of their rivals.

It has been a topsy-turvy season and head coach Mark Wilson believes they only have themselves to blame, accusing his team of losing "stupid goals at stupid times."

The Lanarkshire side host Alloa on Saturday, hoping their opponents will have taken their eye off the ball now their play-off berth is confirmed.
