CELTIC manager Brendan Rodgers is hopeful midfielder Stuart Armstrong will commit his future to the club but is also targeting high-quality reinforcements in the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old has been one of the standout performers for the Northern Irishman’s side this season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions to help the Hoops in their bid to secure the Treble.

Armstrong, who moved to the Scottish champions from Dundee United in February 2015, has a deal running until 2018 but Rodgers says the club are working towards an extension.

He also revealed that the Parkhead side are want to bring in some quality additions to improve their chances of Champions League success in the 2017/18 campaign.

Speaking to Talksport, Rodgers said: “A lot of the boys are tied into the club for the next three to five years – young Kieran signed a five-year deal last summer, Tom Rogic, and Stuart Armstrong is the one we're with at the moment so we're hoping he'll sign another deal.

“So that leaves a real good core of the team together and we don’t need many.

“But if we can bring in a couple of players of quality just to help, we want to make a mark on Europe next season, that would be progress for us and just keep the momentum going with the club."

Celtic are now just one game away from securing only the fourth Treble of the club’s history after beating Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park on Sunday.

However, they were dealt a blow when Moussa Dembele limped off during the first half with a muscle injury.

Despite concerns that the French striker could be sidelined for the remainder of the season, Rodgers believes he could still play a part in the end of season showcase against Aberdeen on May 27.

“He gets his scan today so we'll see the extent of it," he said.

"We've still got five weeks till the final so there's still a good possibility he could make it.”
