Scottish Champions Team Mouat have added another international title to their cv after they beat Switzerland’s Team Schwaller 7-4 in the final of the Aberdeen International, hosted at Curl Aberdeen this weekend.

Mouat’s quartet, who will be representing Scotland at the World Championships in Las Vegas at the end of this month, got their final preparations off to a flying start after beating World Championship representatives from Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands on the way to the play-off stages of the tournament. From there, Mouat’s men beat Team Stirling Gin skipped by Sochi silver medallist Greg Drummond, 7-4 in the quarter final, before beating this year’s British Olympians Team Smith 9-6 in the semi final, having previously beaten them in the recent best of three match World Play-Offs competition at the beginning of the month to earn their place in Las Vegas.

Speaking after the final, Edinburgh based skip Bruce Mouat said: “It was a good final against Yannick’s (Schwaller) team, we started strongly as we stole a two at the first end, which was really us capitalising on a mistake they made and we kept the momentum going from there.

“I missed a couple of shots in the middle of the game but securing a two at the seventh really sealed the deal for us. It epitomises how we like to play, to get off to a strong start and keep lots of stones in play and it seems to have worked for us really well over the year as we are quite an aggressive team,” he said.

Since the start of the season they have claimed two wins across the Atlantic at the Oakville Classic and Stu Sells before becoming the first Scottish and British men’s rink to win a Grand Slam. In doing so, Mouat became the youngest skip ever to win a slam when he claimed that title at the Boost National and earlier this year they became national champions for the first time. Mouat has also won two titles with Mixed Doubles partner Gina Aitken this season, at the Gavle Mixed Doubles in Sweden and just last weekend the Slovakian Mixed Doubles Cup.

Mouat said it has been an amazing season so far but that he and his team want to finish their year the same as they started it. He noted: “I am not one to get carried away by successes as I like to keep my feet firmly on the ground, but I am pretty happy with how things have gone this weekend and we could not have asked for better preparation heading to the World Championships.

“We have a week of training ahead to find tune things after the weekend and we will take a lot of confidence from this going into the event at Vegas and if we play well all week there we know we stand a good chance of making the play-offs.”

Commenting on their consistency since the team was formed at the start of this season, he added: “We have really clicked as a unit, we understand each other really well and what we all have to do and I think our coaches are pretty happy with the way we are playing.

“We are very excited about what is to come, we have one more week of training before we head out and it is important we don’t tire ourselves out, but we feel ready and to be honest Vegas cannot come soon enough for us.”

Coach Alan Hannah said: “This was a great preparation weekend in advance of the World Championships in Las Vegas with seven of our rival teams in the field at Aberdeen. We look forward to a period of further training prior to us travelling out to the USA in ten days time.”

The men’s World Curling Championships gets underway on 31 March - 8 April in Orleans Arena, Las Vegas in Nevada.
