LEWIS BENSON lost out by the finest of margins to Johnny Coyle in Belfast on Saturday night.
Benson and Coyle were embroiled in a ferocious battle from the off, with a cut above Benson’s eye in the third round threatening to call a stop to proceedings.
But, the bleeding was stemmed and the pair proceeded to go toe to toe throughout all ten rounds. However, the judges deemed that the Englishman had done just enough, awarding him a points victory, 96-95 on the referee’s scorecard. The loss saw Benson lose his unbeaten record but the Edinburgh man vowed to learn from the experience.
“Obviously, I didn’t get the decision I thought I deserved, but we live and we learn,” said the 26-year-old.
“That fight is going to do so much for me. That’s what I’m in this game for - I’m not in this to take easy fights and win all the time, I’m up for these step ups.”
Benson’s compatriot Joe Ham also suffered his first-ever pro defeat, losing out on points to Tyrone McCulloch.
