Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes admits he is hoping to recruit two new players to ease his defensive crisis after Scott McKenna was ruled out for six weeks.
McKenna is one of four players in the rearguard who will not be available for Saturday’s trip to Dundee after the Scotland internationalist tore his hamstring just 30 minutes into the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Rangers
Right-back Shay Logan will serve his final league suspension at Dens Park, while McInnes is also without injured pair Mark Reynolds and Tommie Hoban.
McKenna’s set-back is a blow to both Aberdeen and the national team. As well as missing domestic matches against the Dark Blues, Hibs and Kilmarnock, the sought after x21-year-old will also not be available for UEFA Nation League clashes with Albania and Belgium on September 10 and 13 respectively.
McInnes admits he is desperately trying to bolster his squad ahead of the trip to Tayside.
He said: “We’ve not had our troubles to seek defensively, we’ve got six defenders in the building and four are either injured or suspended.
“Dom Ball filled in at right back against Rangers and did admirably well but it’s a real concern that we need to try and address that and maybe get a couple of bodies in.
“Scott’s injury is down to fatigue, the travelling and the game at Burnley the other night. That’s all that is, you’re in more danger of picking up these types of injuries.”
McInnes, meanwhile, insists he is confident his players will be back on form for the match against Dundee following a demanding Europa League tie with Burnley, which saw the Dons lose after 4-2 after extra-time in last Thursday’s second leg.
McInnes added: “I know after a couple of days off and with a freshness into the team we’ll be better again on Saturday.
“I think the players will get to that intensity levels that we showed against Burnley that we couldn’t quite get to against Rangers.
“I’m pleased we’ve had those days off because when the dust settles, it’s another 1-1 draw.
“We’ve had two with Burley and now with Rangers, we want to win games but we’ve played some good teams.
“The intention is always to win and focus to be at our best, that freshness will be important against Dundee.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
