ANDY Robertson’s pride in leading his country out at Hampden for the first time was overshadowed last night by his frustration about the “basic errors” which allowed Belgium to use the occasion to inflict Scotland’s heaviest home defeat for 45 years, writes Stewart Fisher.

The 24-year-old Liverpool full-back’s Mount Florida fairytale turned sour as the Belgians left Alex McLeish’s side licking their wounds with a home defeat which was their heaviest since a 5-0 reverse to England in 1973.

Robertson said his focus was purely on making sure the mistakes are eradicated in time for the home meeting with Albania on Monday night.

“Did I enjoy it?” said Robertson. “Not really, no, although I am sure there will be better days. Obviously, it was an emotional day, with all my family here it was an emotional day for all them as well. But I don’t care about the armband on my arm if we get beaten 4-0.

“[Eden] Hazard scored an unbelievable one but other than that the three are all our own doing and that needs to change,” he added.

“Craig [Gordon] has obviously tried a quick throw out, John [McGinn] is not ready for it, and he is caught in two minds and we are one-nil down. Other than that, I don’t think they had many chances.

“It is a new group of boys, and a new formation with a new manager so we are going to have some teething problems. At the end of the day it is basic errors and all the boys who made them will know. All the boys round about are just as much to blame so we need to fix that for Monday.”

Substitute Ryan Jack, caught on the ball by Youri Tielemans in the run-up to Belgium’s fourth, said: “There is no hiding place when you make a mistake but it’s a friendly so we go again on Monday.”
