Scotland experienced mixed fortunes on day two of the Curling World Cup in Suzhou, China yesterday with with the men notching up a win and a loss while the women fell to defeat.

The women are missing regular skip Eve Muirhead and so this week, are skipped by Jennifer Dodds, accompanied by Olympic medallists Vicki Chalmers and Lauran Grey as well as Victoria Wright.

The Scots won their opening match 6-5 against Japan on day one but following a 7-4 defeat to China yesterday, are unlikely to progress to the final now.

A poor start against the Chinese put Dodds and her rink under pressure, with their opponents going 4-0 up in the first end before pulling away to secure the win.

The Scottish men, skipped by Bruce Mouat, began the day on the wrong end of a 11-1 defeat by Canada in the morning session but were required to pick themselves up almost immediately as they faced Switzerland last night.

In a tight match, Mouat and his rink held their nerve to record a 5-4 victory, with the skip delighted to have executed the final shot when it really mattered.

“It wasn’t our best end, and we needed a shot like that to pull out the win,” he said. “So I’m glad that I was able to make it in tough conditions."

Today, the women will take on Sweden and Japan while the men are also up against Japan.
