GORDON: Goal was breached three times but the stopper actually had a decent game; one strong first-half block from Eder but beaten by the player before the game was out. Also saw Helder Costa and Bruma get the ball past him. (6)
O’DONNELL: Re-affirmed the feeling that international level is maybe a step too far at this stage of his career. All over the place as Portugal netted just before the interval and then culpable again as Portugal scored a second. Lost sight of Edes as the visitors doubled their lead. (5)
HENDRY: In at the centre of defence and not a night to remember. Went off with the ball at his feet and lost possession which led to Portugal’s third goal of the night. (5)
MCKENNA: Turned by Eder just before the goal. Was bailed out when Gordon made the save but almost atoned at the other end with a ferocious header in the second period. Effort crept just wide of the post. One decent stop on sub Gedson Fernandez prevented the player finding the net just after he had come into the action. (6)
ROBERTSON: Far more comfortable in his favoured left-back position. Worked the flank and was able to offer a creative outlet on that side but a difficult shift for the Liverpool player. (6)
FORREST: His performance seemed to be a rebuke for the fact he was left out on Thursday night in Israel. Brought energy and confidence to Scotland and one excellent cross for Naismith that almost brought a leveller. Influence faded as Portugal turned the screw. (6)
MCGINN: Couple of decent deliveries from set-pieces, with on almost leading to a leveller. Replaced midway through the second period. (6)
ARMSTRONG: His running gave Scotland a different option, particularly in the opening period. Offering a little bit of creativity in the middle of the park but struggled to assert himself as the game wore on and Portugal dominated. (6)
MCGREGOR: Dragged one effort in the second period just past the post but a difficult night for the Celtic midfielder as Portugal dominated in the middle of the park. (6)
MCBURNIE: Loses a mark for socks at his ankles. Plenty of industry but question marks remain over his quality at this level. (5)
NAISMITH: One diving header just wide of the post in the opening period before netting a late consolation goal at the death. (6)
SHINNIE: On for McGinn midway through the second period. Bamboozled by Bruma as Portugal rubbed salt in Scotland’s wounds by adding a third on the cusp of the final whistle. (3)
MACKAY-STEVEN: On for McBurnie for the last 15 minutes. Nice bit of improvisation as he back-heeled the ball into the path of Naismith for the striker to find the net. (6)
MCDONALD: Replaced Armstrong in the latter stages of the game. (4)
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
