David Law is ready to rise to the challenge. In fact, it seems he’s ready to take on the world. The Aberdonian heads into this week’s Challenge Tour Grand Final in the UAE with a place on next year’s European Tour in his grasp, writes Nick Rodger.

At 12th on the rankings, the former Scottish Amateur champion is tucked inside a top-15 spot required to earn promotion to the main circuit.

Law, who burnished a sturdy campaign with a maiden victory on home soil in the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge in Aviemore back in June, tees-up today in fine fettle and the feel-good factor has been bolstered by the cheery, upbeat pearls of wisdom of his coach, Alan McCloskey.

“I started working with Alan at the start of last year and that’s been a huge help for me,” said Law.

“We have really seen differences in my long game this year. I think all round in general, I have gained a bit of distance and I have gained a bit of ball flight.

“I think all these little things have added together to make me a more consistent golfer. Alan is brilliant. His enthusiasm and his knowledge is infectious.

“When you have a lesson with Alan, you think you could go 12 rounds with Mike Tyson. He’s not just a coach, he’s a psychologist as well. You come away from a day with Alan thinking you are a world-beater.”

Two cuts made in China recently have fortified Law’s place in the promotion places and the 27-year-old, one of four Scots currently holding a top-15 spot with one event to go, is just about home and hosed.

“I was looking the other day and

I think I’m right in saying that I’ve 11 top 25s and 10 top 20s this season,” he said. “I’ve only had three top 10s, but two of them were big ones.

“Without the first and the second then consistency is over-rated. But having those two huge weeks gives me the luxury of not necessarily having to record thirds and fourths. I just need to keep going.

“I’ve had my big weeks and just need to keep topping up, which I’ve done. I’ve felt very comfortable in the position I’ve been in all season. I just need to stay focused.”
