JOHN Beaton will take charge of his first Old Firm game on Saturday. It was confirmed yesterday that the Lanarkshire official would be the man in the middle as Rangers host Celtic at Ibrox, where he will be assisted by Alan Mulvanny and Dougie Potter, with Bobby Madden the fourth official. The 35-year-old Beaton, who day job is as a communications officer at Strathclyde University, travelled to Euro 2016 as part of Willie Collum's officiating team. While his promotion caps a fine season for a referee who also officiated at the BetFred Cup final between Aberdeen and Celtic at Hampden earlier in the season, Beaton was nonetheless at the centre of controversy for failing to dismiss Joe Garner for a tackle on Dougie Imrie during the 6-0 William Hill Scottish Cup win against Hamilton in March.
