CRAIG GORDON: First of the two goalkeepers to be called into a meaningful save after half an hour when he pushed a shot over his crossbar. Busy again early in the second half when he repelled a whipped free kick and made a few other decent stops after that, including vital late block with his legs. 8
MIKAEL LUSTIG: Swede given license to get forward at every opportunity to send in crosses, although too often he failed to pick out a team-mate in the centre. 6
KRISTOFFER AJER: First Celtic appearance in a year for the Norwegian defender who spent the second half of last season on loan at Kilmarnock. First-half header from a corner drifted narrowly over and did little wrong defensively, although harshly booked late on. 6
JOZU SIMUNOVIC: Soon-to-be Bosnian international was mostly comfortable at the back dealing with the aerial presence of Nicklas Bendtner although left exposed at Rosenborg’s chances. 6
KIERAN TIERNEY: Got forward when possible to create chances, including providing a pinpoint cross for James Forrest that deserved a better finish. Couldn’t impact game as he often has in the past, however. 6
OLIVIER NTCHAM: Role mostly involved recycling possession in midfield but showcased some nice touches too, including one first-half pass that sent Stuart Armstrong clear, although occasionally sloppy with it. 6
SCOTT BROWN: Almost every Celtic attack passed through the captain at least once in the build-up, although it did make play overly laborious at time. Poor pass on the hour mark should have led to Rosenborg opener. 6
JAMES FORREST: Popped up only in flashes, sometimes drifting in from the right wing to offer another presence in the penalty box. Should have done better with tame first-half header and struggled to get the beating of the Rosenborg full-back. 5
STUART ARMSTRONG: Saw the ball too infrequently, playing too far deep from Tom Rogic to offer meaningful support and unable to make a telling contribution whenever in possession. Shot in second half saw goalkeeper Andre Hansen make his first meaningful save. 5
SCOTT SINCLAIR: Quiet throughout with most of Celtic’s attacks going down the other flank, although took a heavy dunt midway through the first period that left him on the deck. 5
TOM ROGIC: Nominally Celtic’s number nine with Leigh Griffiths suspended and Moussa Dembele injured but played deeper than a normal centre forward and couldn’t get in the groove. Marginally more influential when switched back to customary role. 5
Subs:
JONNY HAYES (for Ntcham 63): Pushed into auxiliary centre-forward role that allowed Rogic to drop deeper. 5
KUNDAI BENYU (for Forrest 81): Didn’t make a difference N/A
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
