The problem with big events is that there are a lot of big names to contend with, writes Nick Rodger.

“It’s a nightmare getting on the range, it’s mobbed,” said Paul O’Hara as he limbered up for his debut in the BMW PGA Championship. This practice facility ain’t big enough for the both of us.

Trying to find a space to batter away a bucket of balls may have been a challenge but O’Hara is relishing the test to come over the West Course.

His game is in good fettle although he’s been getting treatment on a niggling pain in his wrist. A victory on the PGA EuroPro Tour last Friday, which earned the Motherwell man a tidy cheque for £10,000, gave the 31-year-old a timely tonic ahead of this week’s showpiece in Surrey.

With a total prize fund of $7 million, O’Hara could add a few more numbers to his bank balance if he can safely negotiate his way into the weekend. Making the cut would guarantee him at least the same sum as he won a few days ago.

O’Hara, who earned a tee-time for Wentworth through the PGA Play-offs, has enjoyed a profitable spell on the domestic Tartan Tour and the wider PGA scene over the past couple of seasons. Having tried, and failed, to work his way up the touring ladder on the mini-circuits of Europe, his decision to do his PGA training and compete closer to home continues to reap rewards.

“This is a long way from where I started out on the EPD Tour in Germany,” said last season’s Tartan Tour No 1, who is one of eight Scots in action this week.

“Over the last couple of years I’ve just enjoyed my golf. I got my hunger back and if you have that you can really build.

“When I was bouncing about the mini tours in Europe and struggling a bit I wasn’t enjoying it. Playing in Scotland just suits me. An airport is nice if you’re going on holiday.

“I’ve won quite a lot over the past couple of seasons and winning breeds confidence. Obviously this is a different week against some of the world’s best players but I’m going into it feeling good. I’ve prepared well and that’s half the battle.

“It’s a huge step up. I’m ready and I’m playing well. It’s a free shot but one with huge rewards.”
