Hannah McCook’s bid for a triple whammy of major crowns on the women’s amateur scene came up short during the final day of the St Rule Trophy over the Old Course yesterday.

The in-form Grantown golfer, who has won both the Irish Open and the Welsh Open titles in recent weeks, finished in a share of fourth place on a 10-under aggregate, just two shots behind the eventual winner, Lianna Bailey of Leicestershire.

McCook had been right in the thick of it coming down the stretch but a damaging double-bogey seven at the 14th in a closing two-under 74 scuppered her hopes.

Bailey, meanwhile, mounted a telling surge on the front nine with an eagle on the second and birdies at the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth as she raced to the turn in 31. Her six-under 70 for a 12-under tally left her one clear of compatriot, Emily Brennan, and Troon's Heather McGarvie as Bailey joined a roll of honour which includes the likes of Catriona Matthew and Annika Sorenstam

On another good weekend for the Scots, McCook and McGarvie were joined in the top-10 by Connie Jaffrey, Chloe Goadby, Eilidh Briggs and Fiona Liddell.

The home contingent will now head for this week's Scottish Women's Amateur Championship at Elie.
