Cartha Queens Park club captain Thomas Davidson has been reflecting on the Glasgow club’s promotion to BT National League Division One.

Having finished third in BT National League Division Two in 2015/16, the aim this term was always a top two place and they secured that in late March after a 37-10 win over Kelso which was their best performance of the season.

“As a group of players we sat down in pre-season and discussed what we wanted to achieve,” Davidson recounts.

“All the players were confident that we could achieve promotion, a few sacrifices would have to be made, but with everything the club and coaches had put in place it was 100% possible. That belief has continued all year round.

“Now we have secured promotion it is like a huge weight has been lifted off the shoulders.

“We've been so close, so many times and a lot of the boys in the team this year have been part of previous squads who have almost been successful.

“A few key wins along the way spring to mind. GHK at Anniesland, as we weren't quite sure what to expect, Biggar away, after getting turned over down there a couple of years ago and both Kirkcaldy and Peebles away, huge games and difficult places to go, but the boys showed a great confidence and belief.”

Davidson has played rugby since he was 10-years-old.

The scrum-half, 24, has played at Cartha his whole life, with the exception of one full season, and as a result is very proud of the team from Dumbreck.

“Every single player has put in a huge effort since pre-season last year,” he stated.

“We were training over the festive period and guys have given up their Friday nights on more than one occasion to train.

“The commitment and effort from everyone in the squad has been huge.

“I'm just the guy with the title, every time we step out on to the field, we have a group of guys with the same common goal, pushing each other to achieve it.

“The work coach Gary Grant does with the players at training is brilliant, but what isn't seen is the amount of stuff he does away from the training field, behind the scenes.

“He's an incredibly hard working coach, which has rubbed off on the players.

“But in all honesty, every single player and coach has played their part.

“As I mentioned, the work ethic has been spectacular. Each and every one of the guys has played their part in some way or another.

“We have a very good core group of players that have come through having played their whole life at the club which definitely helps, because they have the club at heart in everything they do.

“The club is in great health at the moment. We have a very hard working group of volunteers, from the committee who travel everywhere to support us, the merry band of workers who have worked tirelessly to ensure we haven't had a home game postponed this year, through to the team of people who run match day operations.

“Our junior section is thriving, with good people in the right places and this will, we hope, ultimately feed the senior sections in years to come.

“There will no doubt be people I haven't mentioned, but genuinely the club is in a great place.

“Below the first XV each and every playing member has pushed those in their positions to improve and get better, hence why we've had such a successful few months.

“For me, it is just a great club to be around and involved in.”
