GLASGOW WARRIORS back Sean Lamont is to retire from rugby at the end of the season as one of Scotland's most capped players.
The 36-year-old will hang up his boots after a career that has seen him pull on a national team jersey on 105 occasions, putting him at number three in the all-time appearance charts.
Lamont has represented the Warriors 111 times over two spells at the Scotstoun club, scoring 31 tries, as well as playing for Rotherham, Northampton and Scarlets during a 17-year playing career.
Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend paid tribute to the wing after the announcement was made on Wednesday.
“I was coming to the end of my playing career when Sean and Rory were coming through and there was a real buzz around them," he said to glasgowwarriors.org.
“They were two exciting players who had come into the Glasgow set-up around the same time and went on to have outstanding professional careers.
“I took a real interest in Sean’s game when he was playing at Northampton and started to become a regular in the Scotland team.
"Probably as a supporter seeing Sean score two tries against France was a real breakthrough moment, it was a brilliant win for Scotland that day and Sean - with his gloves and blonde hair - was a key part in the victory.
“He‘ll be one of a very small number of players to have played in every position in the back five. Obviously he played most of his rugby on the wing, but he also performed very well at inside centre when I was an assistant coach with the national team back in 2011.
"He was a success for club and country at outside centre and in one game against Wales I remember he came on at full-back and had very good game at BT Murrayfield.
“Sean has shown a real consistency and resilience to get over a couple of major injuries and to continue to play at a really high level."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
