Greig Tonks: Hasn’t played for his country since the World Cup warm-ups two years ago and took a while to get up to the pace of the game, but bagged his first Scotland points with a penalty. Solid enough when Australia kicked, but did nothing spectacular with the ball 6

Lee Jones: A couple of lively runs and produced a moment of magic to set up the third Scots try, leaping over a defender and timing his pass perfectly to Duncan Taylor in support. Defended enthusiastically, even against much bigger players 7

Alex Dunbar: Dogged and determined. A real fighter, summed up by the final play of the game when Australia cut the Scots defence. He was one of those to get back and stop them making anything of it, getting his hands on the ball to win a penalty as well 7

Duncan Taylor: Completed the set of positions among the outside backs – full-back in the first game, started at centre and moved to the wing in this one. It was a good effort and he was involved twice in the Hamish Watson try in a thoroughly solid performance 7

Rory Hughes: Went off early in the second half after being injured in a collision. Before that, he had been full of running in a highly enthusiastic display – though not all of it to any great purpose. Settled in as the half went on but did not see much of the ball 6

Finn Russell: Produced one of his best performances for Scotland just a couple of hours before learning he was being called up to the Lions. Controlled the game well and defended heroically even when being hit off the ball regularly 9

Ali Price: As things stand, there can be no guarantees that Greig Laidlaw will get his scrum-half spot back next season. Price was lively looking for gaps, quick with his service and picked good options. A couple of kicks went long but that was about it on the debit side 8

Gordon Reid: A couple of penalties went against the Scots front row, but mainly they were solid in the tight while Reid managed to make a number of good carries without being able to find the breakthrough he would have wanted 7

Fraser Brown: A mixed performance. A couple of line-outs went askew but there were also a number under pressure where he hit the mark. The scrum was mixed, but it’s a unit skill, and there was one fantastic break that deserved more 6

Zander Fagerson: A quietish game for the big prop. Carried enthusiastically without being able to find gaps to make them count. Seemed to get on the wrong side of referee Wayne Barnes for a while before WP Nel came on and settled things down again 6

Ben Toolis: Not as dynamic as the week before but still got through a ton of work with some solid defensive efforts, a number of massive hits and finding space when he carried the ball. Makes you wonder why it took him so long to get back into the side 7

Jonny Gray: Jonny was, well, Jonny. Good in the line-out and, with Toolis, put pressure on the Wallaby throw, and tackled willingly. Carried loads of ball as well, but to take the next step he needs to make more ground when he does. 7

John Barclay: Half-a-dozen turnovers, lots of ground with the ball and only a split-second refereeing decision stopped him breaking through into the Australian 22 to see if he could outpace the cover defence. Another impressive performance from the captain 8

Hamish Watson: One of the few to make ground carrying the ball into the heart of the Wallabies defence, and also made a load of tackles. Was not as busy as Barclay in the turnover battle but still helped keep the Australians on the back foot 7

Ryan Wilson: Took one for the team when he was sin-binned for killing the ball as Australia threatened a try. Typical of a selfless performance where he worked hard as anyone to keep the Wallabies at bay without getting involved in much of the glory stuff 7

Replacements

Ross Ford: Came on for Brown and solidified the last piece.

Allan Dell: A routine replacement in the second half but the scrum looked solid.

WP Nel: Brought on early and Scotland did get more scrum pressure after that.

Tim Swinson: Late replacement for Toolis, helped add energy in the final minutes.

Josh Strauss: Made a couple of key carries when Scotland were under the cosh.

Henry Pyrgos: Kept things calm when the pressure was building.

Matt Scott: Played most of the second half; solid but did not find the breaks.
