Defending champion Gordon Reid fell at the first hurdle of the Australian Open wheelchair singles after losing to last year's runner-up Joachim Gerard.

Reid beat Gerard in the final 12 months ago to claim his first grand slam title but the Belgian exacted sweet revenge over his Glaswegian rival by winning 7-5 5-7 7-5.

Gerard will now face Frenchman Nicolas Peifer in the semi-finals, while Reid turns his attention to playing alongside Gerard in the doubles event on Thursday.

They are up against Dutchman Maikel Scheffers and Australian Ben Weekes in the last four.

Britain's Alfie Hewett, who lost to Reid in the Paralympic singles final last summer, was also beaten in Melbourne, bowing out 6-3 3-6 6-3 to France's second seed Stephane Houdet.

Andy Lapthorne, however, beat American Dave Wagner 6-2 6-2 in the quad division and Lucy Shuker eased past Marjolein Buis in the women's event.

Lapthorne will face Australia's top seed Dylan Alcott while Shuker takes on Yui Kamiji of Japan.
