DOUBLES champion Bob Bryan has urged Andy Murray to go ahead with hip surgery and insisted it could prolong the Scot's career - because Bryan recovered from a similar injury.

Bryan, 40, went under the knife in August for a 'Birmingham hip' injury and he and twin brother Mike reached the semi-finals of Australia's ATP tournament last week.

Bryan said: "Seeing the way Andy Murray is feeling hit a nerve with me. I would love to see him do a similar surgery, feel the relief that it gives. I think our hips are pretty similar; just worn down, no cartilage.

"I don't know who Andy is going to choose if he goes this route but I would recommend Dr. Su.

"Andy has spoken to him. He's the only guy that's gotten professional athletes back to the highest level. He's done a baseball guy, an NBA guy, and a hockey guy. No tennis player until me has come back."

Bryan did concede that singles tennis places results in an increased workload compared to doubles, but insisted that Dr Edwin Su's surgery could help and praised Murray's mentality.

"I personally don't underestimate Andy Murray," said Bryan. "You look at the great workers in history; Lendl, Courier, Roddick. This guy is maybe even a step up from those guys.

"There’s no evidence that it's possible in tennis. I mean, so much wear and tear. But I think he could do it."
